Overpower people with confidence π❤️
She was frightened, her body went numb, she was out of words, started stammering and in the end, everyone laughed at her. Do you know why? Not because someone hit her, not because she fell down, not because she looked ugly but because she was frightened to deliver her views in front of an audience confidently. I think that's something usual, something we all must have come across at least once in our lifetime.
Let's chew over and provide insight to the above situation.
Confidence! A must needed element in we humans to face people at any stage. No matter how big the audience is, having confidence is a must to stand in front of people and say your heart out loud. Public speaking has become a necessity these days. At every moment, at every step, we face situations where we need to stand up and speak. To captivate the audience with compelling stories, breaking the ice with interesting jokes, and handling the most difficult questions with ease especially when you are surrounded by people is not something everyone can handle. Not everyone is capable of doing all this, not everyone can stand up with full credence and express their views.
This is the reality, usually but not less than perfect. Most of the time, our fears take over and we imagine ourselves stumbling on the stairs, giving a blank expression, forgetting our lines, stammering along, or losing the audience. It’s easy to interpret these fears as a warning that something will go wrong — a sign that we weren’t meant to be on the stage in the first place and even sometimes we end up being caught in stage fright forever. Something that's disgusting and not easy to leave by.
To begin with, let's talk about confidence. How can one get it? What are the most essential elements needed in oneself to do great with public speaking?
Let's clean up our mikes and discuss some ways to get rid of our fears and be a good spokesperson.
• Be prepared - An obvious thing, one must be fully prepared about the topic one has chosen to present to quit one's fears at the first step. This means knowing the material so well that you need not give a second thought about your expression and making sure that all the logistics are set well in advance. Being clear about your audiovisual equipment, making sure they are working well, not to grumble about them at the last moment. Rehearse well in advance, whether in front of a mirror or among family or friends to make sure no tough scenarios bother you later.
• Be real - Some fears are real, some are not. If you got a 30-minute speech, including 50 slides, you may panic worrying about the time. But the chance that someone will boo out in the middle and that is pretty slim. We are humans, everyone makes mistakes, so prepare yourself for the worst before anything happens, and if it does then don't worry. It's a pretty obvious thing to make mistakes. Just face them with no fear and jump up to the next level. Just be cheerful and happy that at least you got up the courage to stand out in the crowd and speak.
• Be vulnerable - Be yourself. Just reflect them the way you are. It’s tempting to think that confidence means preventing anything from getting to us. But the truth is that our vulnerability can be our greatest strength. They will feel what you feel. Make them realize you are also human, you make mistakes. Being your true self is the hard and fast rule to connect your audience to your emotions. They are there not just to observe and listen, but to connect to your true self, your thoughts, your emotions, and most importantly "You". Sometimes the best way to make something universal is to make it personal.
• Be generous - For being connected to your audience, for being good what one needs to do is to be generous to its audience to be connected in every way. Surely, there’s a reason you want to deliver this talk or give this performance that goes beyond just delivering your service. There's a message you want to deliver to all of them and want them to understand and follow. To practice that, maybe every day in real life. Being generous is something that's gonna help the most.
Putting these four steps into practice doesn't finish your job at all. Keep in mind, there's a bit of balancing you need to do in your mind before addressing your speech. Your ego can be your enemy. Too much ego, and alas! You won't be able to be substantial enough with your audience, too little ego, won't be able to bind and relay them with an everlasting gift. It’s a fine line, and a reason why being present is particularly important. You need to constantly calibrate yourself to be what we like to call “confidently humble and humbly confident.”
Two ants do not fail to pull on a grasshopper. The phrase you all are aware of and make us understand that support can make us do everything. To give the final touch, find people who are supportive enough. Siblings, friends, or anyone you can trust, ask them to assist you, rectify you, and be your support handle. Practice with them, rehearse, rehearse, and see how well it goes. Once you think, you get it. Just go for it.
Remember, you are invincible, once you are ready to be yourself.
These past times have been so hard for me, thank you for inspiring me again ! πΊ
